Cornish Holidays in Railway Camping Coaches

Created by Judith 3 years ago

I have very happy memories of family holidays in the 1960s spent with Ian, Richard and their mum and dad Joan and Eric when we travelled to Cornwall on the Cornish Riviera Express.  Earlier in the day they travelled from Shortlands Station up to London as can be seen in the black and white photo.
Our days by the sea were spent making camp on the sand and even wading through the shallows as the tide retreated to get to a prime spot. Ian, Richard and my brother Stephen would spend hours building sand castles and battlements and always included a pond on which they sailed model boats.  Later in the day Ian could be seen frantically digging higher defences against the incoming tide.
My favourite memory of Ian was in St Ives standing by the camping coach ready to go out for the evening. He had spent time neatly combing his hair and was wearing his latest fashionable pair of sunglasses.   Happy days!

We were so pleased when Ian and Sylvia came to be our neighbours in North Wales so that we could rekindle our friendship.  Ian spent many hours working ouside in his extensive vegetable garden and last year was pleased to pose for a photo with his scarecrow!  (Ian’s the one on the left!). A good friend and a really kind and gentle man. He will be greatly missed.
